Casino Rama is set to host its own MMA show on April 2. Thats four weeks ahead of UFC 129 at Torontos Rogers Centre, the UFCs debut in Ontario. The Rama card -- called "MMA: The Reckoning!" -- is being promoted by Knockout Entertainment Canada, which put on the last boxing show at the casino about two hours north of Toronto in Orillia. Promoter Robert Waterman is based in England and so far the only names on the card are English fighters Tom (Kong) Watson and Dean (Renegade) Amasinger. There was an immediate complication, however, when the Edmonton-based Maximum Fighting Championship asserted that Watson was under contract to them and so could not fight for Waterman. Other fighters will be announced shortly for the Rama show. "We think the card is mainly going to be English and North American fighters fighting Canadians," Waterman said in an interview Monday. "Very shortly well be announcing some quite exciting elite athletes," he added. Jeff Craik, Casino Ramas vice-president of marketing, says the show will feature a strong lineup. "If we fail to do a good job with the quality of the card on the first event, it doesnt bode well for our success at the second and the third and the fourth and so on," he said. Craik also says the choice of April 2 was not linked to the timing of the UFC show. "It wasnt a move to beat the UFC," he said, explaining that the casino pencilled in the date for boxing about a year ago. "When MMA became legalized and the timing really seemed to work itself out, it was just a natural to convert it to MMA," he added. Craik says while Rama has held 13 boxing cards in the past, it does not plan to stage another in 2011 unless "the right fighter and the right card" comes along. "But I think the excitement right now lies in MMA," he said. Waterman has previously worked with UCMMA, the British organization that came out of Cage Rage, and both Watson and Amasinger are UCMMA fighters. Amasinger (7-2) is a lightweight/welterweight who trains with Englands Dan (The Outlaw) Hardy at Team Rough House and was a cast member of Season 9 of "The Ultimate Fighter" reality TV show. Watson (13-4) is a flamboyant middleweight who was beaten by Jesse Taylor at a Maximum Fighting Championship show in Edmonton in September. Watson trainns at Greg Jacksons camp in Albuquerque and has spent time in Montreal, thanks to ties with UFC champion Georges St-Pierre and David Loiseau.
Ryan Callahan Jersey Canadian fighter Denis Kang and Montreal-based coach Eric OKeefe cornered him against Taylor. Waterman said his show could be the first in Ontario, although he has heard of an inquiry for an event in March. MFC, for one, has talked of holding a card in Ontario. Craik called the casinos experience with boxing "mixed," with the high points all linked to fights involving former world champion Steve Molitor. "I dont think boxing has the kind of cultural popularity that we see in MMA right now," he said. Evidence of that is the number of calls Craik gets from would-be promoters. "It really is non-stop," said Craik. Waterman calls Ontario "really fertile" ground for MMA, from fans to fighters. "Theres a lot of good-quality athletes and especially some young ones coming through," he said from England. Reminded that a lot of the Canadian talent is currently signed to the UFC, Waterman says there are plenty of other quality fighters. "Theres tons of it and the UFC is releasing a lot of top talent at the moment, not necessarily because theyre not of the standard, just they have too many fighters at certain weights." Waterman says he has put on boxing shows around the world from Ukraine to the U.S. and worked with British boxing stars Ricky Hatton and David Haye. Waterman says he was introduced to Rama by a Monaco casino official. That was back in 2006, but it took a while to get the necessary licensing from the Alcohol and Gaming Corporation of Ontario. The Casino Rama venue has a capacity of about 5,000 for MMA. The last boxing card, which featured Troy Ross, drew between 4,200 and 4,300. Tickets for that boxing card ranged from $25 to $125. The MMA show will feature tickets from $50 to $175, which go on sale to the general public on Jan. 18 "I would very much hope this is the beginning of something," said Craik, adding the hope is to stage three or four shows a year. "All of my assumptions and guesses would be wrong if MMA doesnt open huge in the province of Ontario," he added. "Its going to be so popular." The casinos agreement with Knockout Entertainment Canada allows for it to work with other promoters. Waterman, meanwhile, says he is looking at staging MMA shows elsewhere in Canada. ' ' '
